Marble Leaf Banner

by Laura Carrozza, Nov 08 2016

I still like to enjoy the fall festivities before getting completely wrapped up (figuratively and literally) in all the excitement of the holiday season. Now I love Christmas....the lights, the decoration, THE TREE!!!! I love it. And I am super excited to decorate for it...but...until then (I will be counting the days haha), I still like to keep my home festive for the fall and Thanksgiving.

This fun and easy DIY can be used for SO many holidays and occasions. And after you see how easy this is and how beautiful it comes out, you'll want to do this for Christmas and New Years and Valentine's Day, oh my....I am getting ahead of myself. But to keep your home feeling like fall, this is how you can make your own marbled leaf banner!

What you'll need:

  • 2 or 3 craft paints
  • 9x13 inch bake pan
  • Card stock paper
  • Shaving cream
  • Tooth picks
  • Leaf cookie cutter
  • A squeegee or a ruler and plastic wrap
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Twine

Step One:

Fill the bake pan with shaving cream and smooth it out evenly in pan. Then begin to dribble some paint on top of the shaving cream, making differently shapes and squirting the paint in different directions. It's important not to add too much paint to cover too much of the shaving cream.

Step Two:

After you have added your paint to the shaving cream, take a toothpick and begin to drag and swirl the paints together to make a fun pattern. Again, it's important not to blend too much so that you do not see all the different colors.

Step Three:

When you have finished swirling your paint with the toothpick, take a piece of the card stock paper and lay it flat on top of the paint in the bake pan. Press down gently and then slowly lift the card stock paper from the shaving cream and paint and allow it to sit and dry for only 5 minutes. Do not wipe off any of the fluff or heaps of shaving cream from the paper just yet. You must let it dry for 5 minutes first.

Step Four:

If you do not have a squeegee, then take a ruler and wrap it in plastic wrap. After you've let your card stock dry for 5 minutes, take the squeegee or ruler, press the edge to the top of the paper, and scrape off the shaving cream and paint mixture to unveil your very cool and unique marbled design. Make as many sheets as you want. To make a 7 foot long banner, I only needed three pieces of paper. Isn't that so pretty?!

Step Five:

After you've allowed your paint to dry completely, take the leaf cookie cutter and trace the shape multiple times on your card stock. I used a leaf and acorn cookie cutter that I found at Target. Cut out your shapes and arrange evenly in a row.

Step Six:

With your hot glue gun, add a small amount of glue to the back of the leaf cut out and then secure the twine to the glue. Continue until all of your marbled leaves are securely glued to the twine. Make sure you leave a long enough tail on both ends to hang.

Enjoy!
