Burlap FALL Front Door Sign

by Lynn Lilly, Sep 03 2018

The first signs of Fall are starting to pop up in my neighborhood.  Cooler mornings, earlier sunsets and a few pumpkins are popping up on porches. I love changing up my front door and porch decorations on a monthly basis. Fall is one of my favorite seasons to decorate!  I spend a lot of time creating a festive and welcoming environment because this is the first impression my friends and family get when I welcome them to our home! Today I am sharing the easy steps to create my current front door decor, a simple "FALL" burlap bag sign!

The Project: Burlap Fall Door Sign

Materials:

  • 4 Burlap bags (purchase at your local craft store or sew your own)
  • 4 feet of string
  • Letter stencils
  • Black indoor/outdoor acrylic or fabric paint
  • Stencil paint brush
  • Faux flowers and garland
  • Scissor

Directions:

  1. Lay the burlap bags on a flat covered surface and fold over the tops of the bags to create a flap. If you have small bags and are happy with the size you do not have to fold the tops over.
  2. Place the letter stencils in the center of  the front of the burlap bag. If you are not a pro stenciler you can use repositionable adhesive spray on the back of the stencil and stick it to the burlap. This will hold it in place and easily remove when finished.
  3. Pour paint on a paper plate. Using the stencil brush dip it straight down into the paint. Before applying to the burlap offload paint by dabbing on a scrap piece of paper or fabric. When applying paint to the stencil make short up and down dabbing motions until the desired space is covered. Remove stencil while the paint is wet. Let paint dry for 30 minutes or speed up process with a blowdryer.
  4. Next use the scissor to cut small slits on each side of the bag about 3/4 of an inch from the top. The slit needs to go through all layers of the bag including the flap.
  5. Starting with the last letter thread the string through the first slit and tie a knot around the opening. Continue to thread through other side of the bag and tie another knot. The knots will hold the bags in place when hung. Repeat for all the letters, threading them in the order in which they read.
  6. Tie a loop at each end of the string to provide an easy way to hang the sign on door hooks.
  7. Stuff the bottom half of each bag with scrap paper to give the bag shape.
  8. Stuff the top half of the bag with faux flowers and garland until it is overflowing.
  9. Hang on your front door using two small door hooks.

Happy Fall Y'all!
