A year ago in April I went camping for my very first time. This camping trip was spurred on by a client who wanted Craft Box Girls to appear at their Bonnaroo activation as DIY Experts. Rosanna and I set out on a journey to make our first camping trip a great experience and take notes along the way to share it with other first time campers. Since this first camping trip I have been camping two times and might call call myself a pro (maybe-eeee). I have compiled a list of helpful tips, key products and useful information to make your first time camping trip a great experience in true girl fashion.
Start Organized & Stay Organized
Start organized and stay organized. Deflecto's Stackable Caddy Organizer is my go to for camping organization. From packing camping tools and key supplies, to toys and craft supplies to keep the kids occupied on the campsite, the Stackable Caddy Organizer is the perfect solution to stay organized. You can purchase the Stackable Caddy Organizer on Amazon.
The organizers also have a nifty lift and lock feature that provides for easy stacking and traveling!
When it comes time to showering, it is important to find out ahead of time if the campsite has showers. If so you want to be prepared with a waterproof shower caddy (the one pictured is from the Dollar Store), shower shoes and all your shower supplies. I always carry my soap in a wash cloth turned soap pocket and my shampoo, body wash and lotion in Deflecto's Interlocking Storage Tower. The Storage Tower provides compact storage that is waterproof and easily fits travel size bottles. You can purchase the Interlocking Storage Tower on Amazon.
Create a pleasant atmosphere (especially if you are going to be there for multiple days)
Bring a few fun and simple decorations to make the campsite feel like home. A few simple ideas include a fabric colorful banner, flowers in a plastic mason jar vase, table cover, throw pillows and a colorful blanket. I like to create a lounge area that can function as place to hang out and a place to dine. For dinner I cover the cooler with a with a table cover and decorate with flowers.
Unless you are going to sing songs around the campfire, camping can get a little boring. Make sure to bring plenty of books, magazines and games to keep the whole family entertained. If you are bringing your kiddo's make sure to pick up a copy of our children's craft book, Screen Free Crafts Kids Will Love, which is chalked full of simple crafts that will keep the kids entertained.
For the grown ups who want to enjoy a few libations in the evening check out Electric Sky Wine, individually packed glasses of wine in plastic reusable and re-sealable containers. I discovered Electric Sky Wine when I was at Bonnaroo and I can't get enough of it. Not only is it delicious but it is great for camping, the beach, pool, picnics and home entertaining. Electric Sky Wine comes in a pack of 4 (same amount a bottle of wine) and is available in pinot grigio, rose and a red blend.
Comfortable Shoes are Key
Whether you are hanging out by the campsite or taking daily hikes you want to make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes. My go to sport sandals for camping, hiking and any outdoor activities are Tevas. They are comfortable and super functionable. They are built for outdoor sports and will keep your feet cool and blister free!
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well
Pack plenty of bottled water or bring a water purifying system. If you are camping in the warmer months it is very important to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
