Rainbow Hunt Crafts

There are brighter days ahead. Remember you can't have a rainbow without a storm. The rainbow is going to be really bright once this storm passes. In the meantime there are some fun social distancing activities taking place in neighborhoods around the country. One of the activities is the Rainbow Hunt. Neighbors are posting rainbows in windows, on trees, and through out their yard and the neighborhood children are going on a scavenger hunt to find all the rainbows. To celebrate this fun movement I partnered with Crayola to share 3 rainbow themed crafts on their facebook page during our bi-weekly live broadcast series. Below are three crafts and quick instructions to make your very own rainbow crafts!

Rainbow Hunt Crafts

Rainbow Tree Ornaments

Supplies:

  • Crayola Model Magic
  • Crayola Model Magic Tools
  • Yarn
  • Crayola Washable Glue

Directions:

  1. Roll out thin pieces of Model Magic for each color of the rainbow. You don't have follow the traditional rainbow colors.
  2. Line each roll up and bend to form the rainbow. 
  3. Use the plastic knife to trim the edges so they are even.
  4. Roll out the white Model Magic to about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Use a circle punch or free hand cut 4 small circles. 
  6. Overlap two circles and press together. Squish to give them an oval shape. Repeat with the other two circles.
  7. Press the clouds on each end of the rainbow. 
  8. Let dry overnight. 
  9. Once your rainbow is dry cut a piece of yarn and attach in a loop with glue on the back of the rainbow. 

These are so fun to hang on the trees in your yard! 

Rainbow Hunt Crafts

Cardboard Construction Paper and Pom Pom Rainbow

Materials

  • Cardboard
  • Crayola Construction Paper
  • Crayola Glue Stick
  • White Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Crayola Washable Glue

Directions:

  1. Cut a rainbow shape from a cardboard box. 
  2. Trace the cardboard rainbow on the red construction paper. Continue to trace and cut each color of the rainbow, making each layer slightly smaller. 
  3. Use the glue stick to glue each layer together and to the cardboard. 
  4. Using a small scrap of cardboard about 4 inches long, wrap the yarn around it 120-150 times. Carefully slide it off the cardboard keeping the loops intact. Cut a piece of yarn 6 inches long. Lay it horizontally on the table, Lay the loops on top of it and tie it tightly around the loops in the center. Double knot it. Use the scissor to cut each loop leaving you will a fluffy pom pom. Repeat three more times. 
  5. Glue two pom poms to each end of the rainbow. 

Display in your window or on a porch chair to brighten your neighbors day!

Rainbow Paper Chain Wall Mural

Materials

  • Crayola Construction Paper
  • Crayola Glue Stick
  • Ruler
  • Dowel
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon (optional)

Directions:

  1. Cut strips of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple construction paper that 1.5 inches x 6 inches. I used 52 Red, 37 orange, 32 yellow, 46 green, 30 blue, and 44 purple to create the cascading pattern. You can adjust based on the pattern you want to create. 
  2. I used a 36 inch dowel. You can leave the dowel raw or wrap ribbon around it. I also added arrow decorations to each end. Both of these steps are optional.
  3. Start by gluing the red strips around the dowel and continue to glue strips around each loop as you build your design. 

Display in your window or hang on a wall to make your family smile! I am putting this one in my daughters playroom!
