3 Recycled Crafts

by Lynn Lilly, Jan 17 2023

Earth day is this week and I am continuing my partnership with Crayola to help inspire their community with at home crafts during my bi-weekly live broadcasts on their Facebook page. In celebration of Earth Day this week I am sharing crafts created with items you have at home and might normally throw away. These crafts are great to keep the kids occupied and get their creative juices flowing! they might also make you think twice before you recycle those household items.

Project 1: Milk Jug Unicorn Planter

Grab that milk or water gallon jug before it hits the recycling bin and create an animal planter. I made a unicorn but you can easily turn the jug into a cat, dog, giraffe, bear or anything you can imagine!

Materials:

  • Empty Gallon Jug
  • Empty Egg Carton
  • Crayola Acrylic Paint
  • Crayola Construction Paper
  • Crayola Bright Pop Paper
  • Crayola Markers
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Pom Poms

Directions:

  1. Using a scissor cut off the top half of the jug. (adult job)
  2. Paint the inside and outside of the bottom half white.
  3. While the jug is drying cut a horn from a piece of paper from the Bright Pop Paper Pad and cut leaves from green construction paper.
  4. Cut apart the egg cups of the egg carton. Take an individual cup and cut each corner towards the middle, stopping about 1/4 inch before you hit the center. Trim the 4 petals and shape the ends. Paint the inside with acrylic paint and sprinkle with glitter.
  5. When the jug is dry, glue the horn on the top edge so the pattern is facing outward.
  6. Glue the leaves and egg carton flowers across the top edge.
  7. Using a marker draw eyelashes, a nose and smile.
  8. Fill with your favorite faux flowers or if you want to plant a real plant cut drainage holes in the bottom of the jug.
